Outside Wytheville Office Supply is the 30-foot metal pencil, left over from when the store owner tried to get businesses to advertise by having oversize objects outside that reflected what they sold.

Visit on a weekend through May and October and you’ll catch live music and live demos from local artisans.

Venture out of Wytheville towards Austinville to see the 200-year-old historic Shot Tower!

The tower was originally used to make ammunition for settlers’ firearms.

The process was long-winded: lead from local mines was melted at the top of the 75-foot tower, then poured through a sieve, down through the tower, before falling another 75-foot drop below the tower into a kettle of cold water.

Phew!

You’ll be taken on a safari bus around the zoo, stopping off to see all the animals.

If you want to get up close with some exotic animals, then Fort Chiswell Animal Park is a must!

It isn’t a petting zoo, but you can interact with the alpacas in their pastures and watch them frolic around.

There are also bees and chickens at the farm, and the owners of Cobb Hill are mines of knowledge about their animals, insects and birds!
