Summer is quickly approaching and along with the temperatures outdoors, the recruiting hot stove is heating up in Gainesville. Billy Napier and Co. recently extended an offer to an in-state prospect who quickly turned around and scheduled an official visit at the end of this month.

Three-star wide receiver Tae’shaun Gelsey out of Jacksonville (Florida) Riverside in the 2025 cycle received a scholarship offer from the Gators this week. The 6-foot-4-inch, 220-pound pass-catcher who projects more at the tight end position than as a wideout, has been on the Orange and Blue’s radar in the past but things took a major step forward as the coaching staff has made haste in welcoming the recruit to campus.

“It first started, I went to their camp last year and performed pretty well I think,” he told Swamp247.

“I guess that was when I really started getting a look from them. I would say that was when they got to see that I can play. They want to see how my body was going to develop, and wanted to see some of my game film as a junior after I camped with them last summer. They saw that, and had a meeting. After that, they got in touch with me, and gave me an offer.”

“The offer just came, but they’ve always been recruiting me,” he continues. “So they aren’t new to me. I have a good relationship with them. Once they did offer, it was the icing on the cake. I feel like things are set now with them and they aren’t new. I just have the offer now, so they are bigger in the discussion right now.

“With spring ball going on right now, a lot more schools could come in. I have some schools that stand out right now, but it could change with new schools starting to recognize me and coming to see me. It’s all possible to change, but some schools stand out.”

Talking about co-offensive coordinator Russ Callaway

“He’s a cool coach,” he tells Swamp247 of Callaway. “He’s really straight up and honest with me. He told me he knows I play receiver in high school. He told me that at any time I tell him the truth if I want to take tight end into consideration.”

Gelsey has taken that honest approach to heart.

“If it wasn’t for me, then just let him know, and I gave him my straight-up answer that I wasn’t against it. He’s just straight up and honest. I like that. He won’t lie and keeps it real. He said he sees me as a hybrid type that can do some wide receiver and tight end things.”

Gelsey's connection with the rest of Florida's staff

As for the rest of Napier’s army of coaches and staffers, he appears to feel good about them as well.

“I have a pretty good relationship with most of the coaching staff because I’ve been down there multiple times,” Gelsey offered to Gators Online. “I’ve been able to see them a lot, whether it’s watching them coach or having a normal conversation.”

“They have a nice facility and I like it,” he notes. “I think all the coaches there are cool. I don’t know that I’ve seen all of the campus, but I’ve seen most of it. I went to a junior day earlier this year, I’ve camped twice, and I’ve been to some games there. I feel like I’ve experienced a lot there, and it’s always grown on me.”

Where the Gators currently stand in Gelsey's recruitment

“They sit high on my list,” Gelsey said of the Gators.

“They play a big part in my recruiting process. They’re in the toughest conference in college football. That is big to me. That’s not a small thing.”

It really does mean more in the Southeastern Conference.

“Knowing they’re playing the best of the best, it really meant something to me when they said I can be a matchup nightmare when being guarded by a safety, cornerback or linebacker.”

Official visit and decision dates

“The date scheduled is May 31 through June 2,” he said of the Gators.

“I am about set up with Wake Forest on one too. My plan for that one is June 14 I believe. I am working that out now with them. I have been thinking about UCF for one. I gotta talk to the coaches about that one. Other than that, I’ve been taking to Tulane too. So maybe them. I am still sort of figuring out what I want to set. I don’t want to schedule an OV somewhere that I don’t see myself at.”

As for his final decision, he is set on a day in the middle of the summer.

“I plan on making a decision on July 13.”
