James Gunn has confirmed the long-rumoured Green Lantern TV show has been given a full season order.

Deadline reported on Tuesday (June 25) that the series, titled Lanterns, would join the Harry Potter TV show and It prequel Welcome to Derry in moving from streaming exclusively on Max to airing on TV on HBO. All three shows will stream on Max, too.

The cosmic adventure series will be adapted for live-action by Watchmen's Damon Lindelof, Ozark's Chris Mundy, and acclaimed DC Comics writer Tom King. DCU bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce Lanterns.

The series revolves around new recruit John Stewart joining the DC Universe's cosmic police agency known as the Green Lanterns, where he is mentored by veteran hero Hal Jordan. No casting has been announced yet.

James Gunn and Peter Safran

Gunn and Safran said today: "We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman."

HBO has commissioned an eight-part series, with production details and international release dates to come later.

"We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern," HBO CEO Casey Bloys said on Tuesday.

"As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era."

Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle

Gunn and Safran's rebranded and revamped DCU will officially kick off with David Corenswet's Superman movie in 2025 (though they've previously confirmed Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle is the first official character in their universe).

Last year, the duo announced an ambitious film slate for heroes such as Supergirl (starring House of the Dragon's Milly Alco*ck), The Authority, Batman and Swamp Thing, alongside multiple TV shows to supplement the cinematic universe.

Joining Lanterns on the TV side will be the animated series Creature Commandos and The Suicide Squad spinoff Waller, along with the second season of Peacemaker and a Booster Gold comedy series.
