(AP) Other Happenings Across the U.S. Ex-Con Charged in Attack on Nun CHICAGO (UPI) A 60-year-old nun whose attacker slashed her 36 times with her own penknife and threatened to gouge out her eyes was in good condition Sunday at St. Mary Nazareth Hospital. Joseph Barnes, an ex-convict, was charged with attempted murder, attempted rape, armed robbery and home invasion in the attack Friday on Sister Mary Constance Polek. Barnes was being held on 000 bond, officials said.

Sister Polek was slashed around her head, neck and eyes by the attacker, who threatened to cut her eyes out, police said. Sister Polek was weeding the SISTER POLEK garden at the Sisters of the Resur- BARNES rection convent when a man asked her if he could do some chores in exchange for a meal, police said. Sister Polek gave him the penknife she used for weeding and went inside to make sandwiches for him. A few minutes later, the man rang the convent bell. Sister Polek, carrying a bag of sandwiches, answered the door, police said, but Barnes pushed her aside.

"That's not what I want," police said Barnes told her. ABA to Pay Haig, $20,000 for Speech SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) The American Bar Association is paying former Secretary of State Alexander Haig $20,000 nearly onethird his Cabinet salary for his first public speech following his stormy resignation. Haig will address many of the 12,000 lawyers attending the San Francisco convention this morning. "It's 20,000 times as high as last year's speaker Vice President (George) Bush," said ABA spokesman Richard Collins. Government officials are not paid for speeches.

The $20,000 is a record fee paid a speaker by the ABA. But even at that price, Haig, who made $69,630 as secretary of state, was the ABA's third choice, Collins said. The association first asked President Reagan but he declined. The second choice was George Shultz, named to succeed Haig. Shultz is not giving any speeches until October, the ABA was told.

Nixon Quit Eight Years Ago Today WASHINGTON (UPI) On the eighth anniversary today of Richard Nixon's resignation to avoid impeachment, the former president is still fighting attempts to make the White House tapes public. Nixon's lawyers decided, only hours from the deadline last week, to appeal to the Supreme Court the issue already decided by a federal district court and a court of appeals of whether hitherto undisclosed tapes should be made public.
