Miami is still a solid ratings generating program despite the lack of overall success. The Miami metro is still one of the largest in the country and they will engage with the Canes whenever they're decent. I'm with JR on this one...having all 3 FL schools in the same league creates some major TV battles reminiscent of the 80s and 90s games that were must-see TV. That and I can't look past the idea of the Magnificent Seven. There's a reason those schools were cooperating and there's a reason the story got out even if most everyone has gone quiet since that time. The debate for me is the 8th school to accompany the Mag 7 and the timing, of course.

The only...and I mean, only, rationale for taking Cal is if you're somehow scheming to add Stanford and Notre Dame together as schools 23 and 24 (the Big Ten). There's no way the SEC could be the conference adding those 4 schools...Cal as the lone school west of Texas? Eh. No.

Well, if you're the SEC you'd still have 4 more spots to fill before reaching 24. The geography doesn't look odd if you wend one or two of your last 4 invitations to schools in, say, Arizona. Your coast-to-coast footprint sustains an athletic personality geared to warm-weather sports. You've got more time zones involved now for TV. And if not every school you add here is a traditional football monster, maybe some of your current members are OK with that at this point. Cal, for its part, carries the public-school flag for the Golden State in the SEC. Solo. No getting lost in the crowd. And now the school has revenues enough to build again toward its ambitions. The losers in this scenario are the Big Ten and the remnants of the ACC that don't get picked up by the Big 12. But the Big 12 can go to 20 in this scenario by picking through their choice of ACC leftovers, which solidifies them as the #3 conference.

Stanford shouldn't have indulged, but, seems on-brand for those stiffs. As for 2024 bombshells...I don't think this is a "bombshell," per se, but, count me as surprised that there haven't been more D1 schools dropping down to D2 or D3 with NIL, transfer portals, and the general costs of doing athletic business yet. I would have thought we'd have another school announcing a drop-down by now, quite honestly.

I don't know if Villanova football joining Patriot is anything; or even W&M leaving for Patriot or SoCon.
