Start your morning with a creamy, protein-packed bowl of oatmeal with this easy recipe for Greek yogurt oatmeal! You’ll love how creamy the yogurt tastes.

Last week, we chatted about why you feel hungry an hour or two after eating traditional oatmeal. Spoiler alert: you need to add protein! You can add a variety of ingredients to your oatmeal to boost the protein – last week we talked about cottage cheese oatmeal and this week we’re chatting about Greek yogurt oatmeal!

Benefits of Greek Yogurt

I love Greek yogurt for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it is an excellent source of protein and I usually buy full fat Greek yogurt (as opposed to low-fat or fat-free) to get all those healthy fats as well. Pro tip: low-fat and fat-free products typically swap fat for sugar to make sure it still tastes good! I’ll take fat over sugar any day. It’s also loaded with probiotics (aka good bacteria) which is important for a healthy gut and immune system!

How to Add Greek Yogurt to Oatmeal

It’s super simple to add Greek yogurt to oatmeal. You can add it to overnight oats to make the meal thicker and creamier, or can add it to hot oatmeal. The key for hot oatmeal is waiting until the oats are cooked to mix in the yogurt. You don’t want to cook the yogurt too much – you’ll lose all of the benefits from that good bacteria!

Greek yogurt does change the flavor of the oats slightly but it’s worth noting – and it does add quite a bit of creaminess. You can also play with the final flavor combination by adding in different flavors of yogurt. I typically stick to plain or vanilla but feel free to switch it up!

Greek Yogurt Oatmeal

By: Brittany Mullins

Start your morning with a creamy, protein-packed bowl of oatmeal with this easy recipe for Greek yogurt oatmeal! You'll love how creamy the yogurt tastes.

Prep Time: 5 minutes minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes minutes

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 banana, sliced (optional)*
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1 1/4 cup water, milk or a blend of both
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, optional
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt + more if you'd like

Instructions

  • Add oats, banana slices and sea salt to a pot. Add water/milk and stir to combine. Add cinnamon and vanilla, if using. Heat over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes or until all the liquid has been absorbed. Be sure to stir the oats several times while cooking to make sure the banana slices melt into the oats. You’ll know the oatmeal is done when all the liquid is absorbed and the oats are thick and fluffy.

  • Remove oats from the heat and stir in Greek yogurt. Start with 1/4 cup and add more if you'd like. Transfer oats to a bowl and top with your favorite oatmeal toppings. I used banana slices, blueberries, granola and peanut butter.

Notes

  • You don't have to cook the oats with a banana, but I like the sweetness it adds. Instead of the banana, you could add another natural sweetener to sweeten the oats. Some options: maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar or even stevia.
