While still in their cages, they learn to read, which helps them escape. They catch up with humans in intelligence and surpass us. "Some of the rats decide.

that they're intelligent enough not to have to exist as scavengers on the periphery of human society, so a group of them decides to go to their own place and be selfsufficient. Others decide to stay and coast. The rats who set up their own kingdom are too intelligent to be discovered by humans as so is Santa Claus." If Bluth chose the subject because of its parallels with his own decision not to coast at Disney any longer, he won't be the one to say On the surface, Bluth's career looked golden, but his frustrations at Disney had begun very early in his tenure there. He and a group of compatriots decided to make their own film on their own time. "Our intention was very pure.

We simply wanted to know how to cut sequences together and how to pace a film. None of that was being taught to us at Disney, so we decided to find out for ourselves. "We bought a lot of equipment and worked evenings in my garage. That was easy enough because Disney shooed us out of the studio every night at 6:30. We took nothing from the studio not' one pencil, not one piece of paper, not one minute of time because we knew someone would accuse us somewhere down the line.

"We made sure they knew what we were doing. When things started to get uncomfortable for us at Disney, we decided use what we'd done, a nearly completed half-hour film called 'Banjo the Woodpile as a lifeboat. We decided to show it around to get backing so we could build our own studio." Bluth eventually sold "Banjo" to ABC, which finally aired it several months ago. "'We took a tremendous loss, but everybody was compensated for the hours they put in, except for three of us." '81. V. ca Bluth had hoped to sell "Banjo" to Disney, but studio boss Ron Miller wouldn't look at it, Bluth said. That's when Bluth knew his. time was up at Disney.

"We left when the money to make 'NIMH' came through. I'd known for six months I had to leave. I knew they wouldn't really miss us, any more than they really knew we. were there." By Disney's standards, Bluth was brought along extremely quickly. He had worked at the studio as a teen-ager for a year in the 1950s before departing for two years of Mormon missionary work in Argentina.

After directing in the Los Angeles theater in the 1960s, he returned to Disney in 1971. He did drawings for "Robin Hood" (1973), was a directing animator on "The Rescuers" (1977) and director of animation on "Pete's Dragon" (1977). He produced and directed a 1978 Disney featurette, "'The Small One." Where animation is concerned, Bluth feels a sense of mission. "Animation is an American art. The form was born here.

We mustn't let it die here. For instance, when I was working on 'The Rescuers' at Disney I was instructed to leave one character's eyes the same color as his skin, gray. I kept telling them, the eye is the light of the soul. It can't cost that much just to wash the brush and paint in the whites of the eyes. The answer I eternally got was that the audience wouldn't know the difference and we could save a lot of money.

"To succeed, animation pictures need a screen filled with movement. There has to be rain and wind and above all shadows. The minute you leave the shadows out, the characters aren't nailed to reality any more. You save a lot of money omitting shadows, but you lose all the realism. If enough care is taken, the audience forgets it is watching drawings and begins to identify with the characters. You must get that audience identification if you are going to get them to feel anything. With much animation today, you don't feel up, you don't feel down; you just watch without being moved. Animation should lift your spirits.

Its themes should be exalted 'Snow White' dealt with nothing less than resurrection." 13 Bluth has an exalted theme for his next film after 'NIMH." Titled "East of the Sun, -West of the Moon," it will be about "the world healing itself after a nuclear holocaust." The $12 million film will be released at Christmas, 1984. It's no coincidence that Disney has long planned to release its $20 million "The Black Cauldron" the same season. "I love the idea of competition with Disney," Bluth says.
